Billy and Me - Giovanna Fletcher

Sophie May has a secret.

One that she’s successfully kept for years. It’s meant that she’s had to give up her dreams of going to university and travelling the world to stay in her little village, living with her mum and working in the local teashop.

But then she meets the gorgeous Billy – an actor with ambitions to make it to the top. And when they fall in love, Sophie is whisked away from thecomfort of her life into Billy’s glamorous – but ruthless – world.

Their relationship throws Sophie right into the spotlight after years of shying away from attention. Can she handle the constant scrutiny that comes with being with Billy? And most of all, is she ready for her secret heartbreak to be discovered and shared with the nation?

I had heard a lot about this book before I read it so I had quite high expectations, I was wary just incase they were a bit too high as I didn't want to find the book disappointing. I was very wrong! It was amazing!, I was drawn into Sophie's world from the first few pages! I loved the way the chapters are different parts/ days in Sophie's life, they are not too long apart that too much has changed but something always has meaning that there is a new focus point for each chapter. This gives a sense of time and in a way showing the character growing and changing. I loved that it was completely Sophie's story and was all her thoughts and words, I think this made you able to connect with Sophie even more.

At first I'll admit I thought it was a typical 'boy meets girl' story but it is so much more, it is not just they meet fall in love and live happily ever after like you usually find. Given that Sophie works in the local tea shop and meets Billy Buskin the famous actor, we are given an unusual insight into the world of actors, something that most books don't do! This allows us to feel part of Sophie's world, and as a non-famous person feel sorry for her throughout her struggles with coming to terms with Billy's job.

I found it very easy to picture Sophie's friend and employer Molly as the way she is written instantly draws you in to who she is. She is shown as a mother figure to Sophie, helping her to overcome things of her past and believe in who she is. We learn that something has happened to Sophie's father, but we don’t find out what until the middle of the book. All we know is that it was something bad and Sophie and her Mum find it hard to speak about as it has hit them very hard. Sophie’s relationship with her mother is a little strained due to this. I won't give too much away as it is quite late on in the book that we begin to learn more about this. Even the other characters in the book that we don't learn much about, neighbours, regulars in the tea shop, Giovanna makes it easy to picture all of them quite vividly.

There was some things that weren't common of romance books and I think that's what made it more enjoyable. There were moments that made me laugh, cry and worry for the characters. It was a book that I didn’t want to put down and I was quite sad when I got to the end. It was a very easy book to read but one of the best I have read, I would highly recommend this to anybody that like a bit of chic-lit!

There is so much more I would love to say about the book but I don't want to give anything at all away! All I know is I can't wait to read Giovanna's next one!
